Where the desert meets the sea, in the wind

Six races on the desert coast of San Juan de Marcona, in the province of Nasca, on Sunday 6 December 2026. The organiser calls it the windiest stretch of the Peruvian coast, and the courses run south along the shore, over the dunes and past a wind farm.

Two races start in the night from the toll station, and the organiser drives the runners there. The 100K leaves at 02:00 after a meeting point in front of the Marcona municipality at midnight, and the 35K Nocturno at 03:00 after a meeting at 01:00. The rest gather at Playa Los Leones at 06:30: the 65K starts there at 06:50, the 42K at 07:00 and the 10K at 08:00. The 21K starts at 09:00 at the Tres Hermanas wind farm and finishes at Playa Los Leones.

Every course runs on two levels, along the shoreline where the coast allows and above the beach, over sand, earth and rock and under rock cathedrals carved by the wind. Many of the rock formations have animal shapes, and the organiser’s favourite is an elephant standing still in front of the ocean. The courses then climb into the dunes among the wind turbines. There are no cups at the hydration points, so every runner carries their own system. The race has been an ITRA member since 2016, and the 42K, 65K and 100K give ITRA points.

The organiser recommends that every runner carries a phone with GPS. On Livebib the runner shares a link with whoever they choose. Family and friends open it in a browser, no app or account needed, and see the position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes. When the signal drops between the cliffs and the dunes, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated instead of freezing.
