Run Rabbit Run 50 Mile

The 50 is an out-and-back, and the organiser says it measures just about exactly 50 miles. The first section is the hardest: more than 3,500 feet of climbing in about 6.4 miles, from the ski area base to the Mt. Werner aid station at the top of the mountain (10,568 feet). From there the course follows the high country past Long Lake (12.8), Base Camp Trailhead (18.0) and Dumont Lake (21.9), across the Continental Divide to the turnaround at Rabbit Ears Mountain, about mile 27.3. There is no aid at the turnaround, only a punch on the card or bib.

The limit is 15 hours, back at the ski area by 9 PM. Men over 60 and women over 50 may take an early 5 AM start, with the same finish deadline. On the way back, runners must leave Dumont Lake by 2:30 PM, Base Camp by 4 PM and Mt. Werner by 7:45 PM. The last six miles drop all the way down the ski hill to the finish. Poles are allowed, and the course is not closed, so expect hikers and mountain bikers.

Because the course comes back the way it went out, the turnaround at Rabbit Ears is the moment family wait for. On Livebib the runner shares a link to their own broadcast, and anyone with it can open it in a browser, no app needed, to see position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the day goes. When the phone loses signal near the Divide, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated.
