Two starts, one ski hill, a night on Emerald Mountain

Run Rabbit Run starts at the base of the Steamboat ski area and climbs straight up Mount Werner, whichever distance you picked.

The 2026 race weekend in Steamboat Springs, Colorado has two events. The 100 mile starts on Friday, September 18 in two groups: the Tortoises at 9 AM with 36 hours, and the Hares at 1 PM with 30 hours, both due back by Saturday evening. The 50 mile starts on Saturday, September 19 at 6 AM with 15 hours to get back by 9 PM. The 50 began in 2007 as a charity run. The 100 followed in 2012.

The organiser describes the 100 as about 101.5 miles with 20,391 feet of ascent and the same again down, around 86 of those miles on trail. It goes over Mount Werner and Buffalo Pass, out along the Wyoming Trail to the nominal high point at 10,557 feet, down through town to Olympian Hall at halfway, around Emerald Mountain in the dark and back the way it came. The 50 is an out-and-back from the ski area across the Continental Divide to Rabbit Ears Mountain.

For the people at home, the hard part is the gaps. Aid stations sit five to fourteen miles apart, the high country has patchy coverage, and most 100 mile runners do the Emerald Mountain loop at night.
