Tunnel Hill 100, live.

The flat, fast rail trail where records fall

The 13th Tunnel Hill 100 starts at 7:00 am on Saturday 14 November 2026 at Vienna City Park in southern Illinois.

Tunnel Hill was founded in 2014 by race director Steve Durbin, who set out to answer one question: how fast can I run? The race uses the Tunnel Hill State Trail, a converted rail corridor through the Shawnee National Forest with crushed limestone underfoot and an overall grade of about 2 percent. Its signature is a 543 foot tunnel, 9.3 miles north of Vienna.

All four races start and finish at Vienna City Park at 7:00 am. The 100 mile course is a double out and back: south 13.1 miles to the Wetlands Center, then north 25 miles to the northern turnaround and back to Vienna for the 50 mile split, and then the same again. The 50 mile race covers one of those circuits and hosts the 2026 USATF 50 Mile Championships. The 100 km, first offered in 2025, follows the 50 mile circuit and then runs 10 km south to a turnaround and back to Vienna, and the marathon goes south to the 13.1 mile turnaround and back.

The course has produced remarkable times: Camille Herron's 100 mile world record of 12:42:40 in 2017, Charlie Lawrence's 4:48:21 for 50 miles in 2023 and Caitriona Jennings' 12:37:04 for 100 miles in 2025. The overall cutoff is 30 hours, at 1:00 pm on Sunday.

Pacers are allowed from mile 50 or nightfall in the 100 mile race, not in the marathon. Crews and families gather at Vienna City Park, which the longer races pass at mile 26.2 and again at mile 50.
