235 km and three alpine climbs in one day

Peaks Challenge Falls Creek is a 235 km ride through the Victorian high country, with more than 4,000 m of climbing and a 13 hour limit.

The 2027 edition is on Sunday 7 March, starting and finishing at Slalom Plaza in the Falls Creek event village. It is run by Bicycle Network, a not for profit organisation, which compares the day to a mountain stage of the Tour de France.

The loop starts with the descent from Falls Creek towards Mount Beauty and then climbs Tawonga Gap, 7.5 km and 476 m. Mount Hotham follows from Harrietville, 29.9 km and 1,303 m, with steep pitches such as the Meg and CRB Hill. After rest stops at Dinner Plain and Omeo comes the back of Falls Creek from the Omeo side, 22.6 km and 980 m, with the first kilometres averaging around 10 percent and 200 km already in the legs.

It suits well trained road cyclists who have prepared for months. Riders must be at least 16, the start is staggered by expected finish time, and the wave leaders of Team Bicycle Network set the pace for goal times. Everyone who finishes inside 13 hours earns the finisher's jersey, with a separate jersey for those under 10 hours. Front and rear lights, two bottles, spare food and a puncture kit are compulsory.

More than 100 km of road is closed for the ride, and the road up from Mount Beauty closes early on the morning of the event. There are eight rest areas on the route, and volunteers work at places such as Tawonga Gap, Dinner Plain, Anglers Rest and Trapyard Gap. Back at Falls Creek an expo with live entertainment, food and drink welcomes the finishers.
