Over the roof of the mainland

Four trail races in Australia’s alps, two of which climb to the highest point on mainland Australia before dropping into the Thredbo Valley.

Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko by UTMB runs from 26 to 28 November 2026 in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales. The organiser publishes four races: the KosciMiler, 160.5 km with 4,731 m of climbing from Jindabyne; the Kosci100, 105.6 km and 2,973 m; the Kosci50, 50.3 km and 1,355 m; and the Kosci30, 33 km and 596 m. The two shorter races go on Thursday 26 November from Perisher Ski Resort; the two long ones on Friday 27 November. All four were listed as sold out when we read the race pages.

The ground is the attraction: granite outcrops, snow gum forests, alpine meadows and mountain streams. The KosciMiler and the Kosci100 both cross the summit of Mt Kosciuszko, which the organiser calls the highest point on mainland Australia, on the Main Range, before heading toward Guthega, back past Smiggin Holes and down into the Thredbo Valley. The Kosci50 and Kosci30 drop from Perisher to Bullocks Flat and climb the Thredbo Valley to Friday Flat. Cutoffs may be brought forward in bad weather, and mandatory gear is checked before the start.

Long alpine days are hard on the people waiting in Thredbo, and harder when a phone loses signal up on the range. A Livebib broadcast is a link the runner shares; family and friends open it in a browser, with no account or app, and see the runner’s position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes. When the signal disappears, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated instead of freezing. The runner decides who gets the link.
