Five starts, one oasis

Five mountain races that leave from different towns in Oman’s Hajar range and all come down to the palm gardens of Birkat Al Mouz.

Oman by UTMB runs from 10 to 12 December 2026 in the Hajar Mountains, in the UTMB World Series. On Thursday the Jabal Classic (103 km, 5,000 m of ascent) leaves Al Hamra at 07:00 and the Hajar Ultra (154 km, 8,000 m) follows from the same town at 15:30. On Friday Skyward Canyon (50 km, 2,400 m) starts in Izki at 07:00. On Saturday the Old Capital Trail (32 km, 1,400 m) starts at 07:00 in front of Nizwa Fort and souq, and Scenic Ascent (21.5 km, 550 m) at 08:00 in Birkat Al Mouz itself. Every race finishes at the race village there.

The organiser describes the ground in specific terms: steep ridgelines, deep wadis, exposed traverses, high plateaus, stone paths through villages, terraced farms cut into cliffs and falaj irrigation channels. The long courses go through Misfat Al Abriyeen and the high settlements of Jabal Akhdar, and Skyward Canyon spends its middle above 2,000 m. The Hajar Ultra includes a short via ferrata around kilometre 87, with harnesses, helmets and guides provided. Days are hot and nights at altitude cold, with wind and fog possible.

The finish is fixed and the starts are not, so most supporters are in Birkat Al Mouz while their runner is a long way off in the mountains. A runner who shares a Livebib link gives them a browser page, no app and no account, with the position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates. In a wadi or behind a ridge where the phone loses signal, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated, never shown as measured.
