Five races under the north face
Everything at Grindelwald is measured against one wall, and the course spends the day running along the foot of it.
Eiger Ultra Trail runs on the balcony trails of the Bernese Oberland: Grosse Scheidegg, the Bachalpsee, the long climb to the Faulhorn at 2,681 metres and the traverse to Schynige Platte, with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau standing over the whole thing. The E101 is the classic distance at 101 kilometres and 6,700 metres of climb; the E250 goes twice as far and more than twice as high, 261 kilometres and 18,000 metres over four days of UNESCO World Heritage terrain; the E51, E35 and E16 take the same scenery in shorter bites.
It is a course made for watching from a distance, because almost none of it is reachable by road. Livebib puts the runner on the actual line — the climbs drawn as they really are, the aid stations in order, distance covered and an arrival estimate for the next one — so the people at the finish in Grindelwald know whether the Faulhorn has gone well or badly.
