Laps through a biathlon stadium at 1,500 metres

A Worldloppet race that does not run one long line down a valley: the Dolomitenlauf skis laps, and the stadium in Obertilliach sees the skiers again and again.

The Dolomitenlauf is held on 23 and 24 January 2027 in Obertilliach, East Tyrol; the organiser calls it the largest cross-country skiing event in Austria. Saturday is freestyle and Sunday classic, each day with the 42 km and 21 km at 10:00 and the 5 km Easyrace at 10:05, and skiers can enter both days. On Friday 22 January there is a Worldloppet Welcome at 16:30 at the bib pick-up, in the Langlauf- und Biathlonzentrum Osttirol, Rodarm 25.

The races use the Dolomitenloipe, which lies at about 1,500 metres above sea level. The 42 km is four laps and the 21 km two, and the Obertilliach biathlon stadium is the central point the field passes several times. Anyone on the long distance who stops after two laps is automatically ranked in the 21 km. The organiser’s motto: “Mehr Genuss und weniger Anstiege!” — more enjoyment, fewer climbs. Online entries close on Wednesday 20 January 2027 at 23:59; late entry on site costs 5 euros extra, and shuttle buses run from the surrounding towns.

Laps are a gift to spectators, but between two passes through the stadium lies a whole lap of forest. A skier can share a link to their own Livebib broadcast: family and friends open it in a browser, with no account and no app, and see position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates lap by lap. When the phone loses signal in the trees, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated instead of freezing. The skier decides who gets the link.
