Closed roads on the Great Ocean Road from Lorne

Amy's Great Ocean Road Gran Fondo is a closed road cycling event from Lorne in Victoria, held in memory of Amy Gillett on the roads she trained on.

The next edition is on Sunday 12 September 2027, when the event returns to September. The first Amy's Gran Fondo was held in 2011, after the death of Amy Gillett, an elite cyclist who lost her life while training with the Australian women's team in Germany. The event supports Amy's Foundation and its work to make riding on Australian roads safer.

There are four ways to take part. The 122 km Gran Fondo starts on Mountjoy Parade in Lorne at 7.30am for the Age Group Race and at 7.50am for the Recreation Category. The 45 km Medio Fondo starts in Apollo Bay at 10.45am and finishes in Lorne. The 90 km Out and Back leaves Lorne at 7am, rides 45 km to Apollo Bay under normal road rules and then returns to Lorne with the Medio Fondo on closed roads.

The long route follows the coast and climbs into the Otways, including the climb from Forrest to the top of Mount Sabine. The Age Group Race is a UCI Gran Fondo World Series event, and the top 25 percent of each age group are invited to the next world championships, set for Abu Dhabi in 2028. Riders must be 18 for the race and 16 for the recreational 122 km, where e-bikes are welcome and there are 7.5 hours to finish. The 45 km is pitched as a first ride for newcomers, with lookouts to stop at along the way.

The event village is in Lorne, where riders collect numbers from Friday 10 September, and the 122 km finish line is near the Lorne Hotel. Roads are fully closed while the event runs, with four aid stations, mobile mechanics and a sag wagon on the course, so anyone driving in the area on the day should check the organiser's road closure information first.
