From the beach to the southern edge of Taiwan

Xtrail is the UTMB World Series race on Taiwan’s Hengchun Peninsula, run from Howard Beach Resort Kenting over the weekend of 5-7 March 2027.

The organiser’s own summary is four words: hot, harsh, humid and runnable. Every course leaves from the seaside at Howard Beach Resort and climbs inland into what the race calls the living spine of the peninsula: beaches, grasslands, dense forest, stony riverbeds and gorges cut through coral limestone. Saturday 6 March belongs to the 100K (98 km, 3,291 m of ascent, 24 hours) at 04:00 and the 50K (50 km, 1,496 m, 13 hours) at 05:30. Sunday 7 March carries the 25K (26 km, 589 m, 7 hours) at 06:00, the 10K (11 km, 201 m, 4 hours) at 07:00 and the 2 km Kids Family Run at 07:30.

The courses have names worth knowing before you go. The 100K runs to the southern edge of the island over coral plateaus and wind-swept ridges, with the Luoshan-Feng wind named as part of the course. The 50K crosses Xiaobaiyue, the southernmost peak, with sea on three sides. The 25K runs Kenting’s Grand Traverse in reverse over the Menmaluo grassland and up Little Jienshih Mountain, and the 10K heads along the south coast toward the Dajianshih ridgeline, which the organiser calls the sacred mountain of the Skaru.

For the people waiting at the resort, the long races are mostly invisible: the 100K starts in the dark and goes up into forest and riverbed. A runner can share a link to their own Livebib broadcast, and family open it in a browser with no app and no account. They see the runner’s position on the course line, the distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the day goes. When the phone loses signal in a gorge, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated instead of freezing. The runner decides who gets the link.
