Three big climbs around Waldo Lake

The next Waldo 100K starts at 4:00 am on Saturday 7 August 2027 at Willamette Pass Ski Area, east of Eugene, Oregon.

Waldo is a 100K loop in the Cascades, starting and finishing at Willamette Pass Ski Area on Highway 58, about 70 miles from Eugene at 5,120 feet. It is run by Waldo Ultras, a non profit, under a permit with the Willamette and Deschutes National Forests. The first race was held on 28 September 2002 under the name Where's Waldo, and it became the Waldo 100K in 2011.

The course is mostly single track with more than 11,000 feet of gain. There are three major climbs of more than 2,000 feet each, over Fuji Mountain, The Twins and Maiden Peak, plus two smaller climbs. The high point is 7,818 feet on Maiden Peak and the low point about 4,900 feet at Gold Lake. Runners never reach Waldo Lake, they only see it from the summits, which is where the name came from.

The second half is remote. From the Road 4290 aid station at mile 37 to the finish the course does not cross a road, and the last three aid stations sit 1.5 to 3 miles from a road on foot. The descent from Maiden Peak uses the faint Leap of Faith trail. The organiser warns it is not a beginner level ultra.

Entry is by lottery, with registration open from 1 to 21 January 2027 and the drawing on 22 January. A finish within 18 hours qualifies for the Western States 100.
