Two days of triathlon on the Sallandse Heuvelrug

Triathlon Holten is a two day triathlon festival in the village of Holten, with international racing and recreational races on and around the Sallandse Heuvelrug.

The 41st edition is on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 July 2027. Recreational entries open in December 2026, and the organisers note that the recreational start series are often full by January. Which race falls on which day follows in the 2027 programme.

For age group athletes there are two main formats. The standard distance is 1,500 m of swimming, 40 km on the bike and 10 km of running. The 1/8 triathlon is 500 m, 20 km and 5 km, and two of its start blocks are kept for people from Holten. There are also youth triathlons, a company triathlon and the Nijha Run for runners. The bike course has included the climb of the Holterberg since 2001.

The race goes back to August 1985, when a first mini triathlon around the Twenhaarsveld pool drew more than 150 participants. It moved to the village centre in 1989, joined the international points race circuit in 2002, hosted the European Championships over the Olympic distance in 2009 and has held a Europe Triathlon Premium Cup every year since 2010. Whether that cup returns in 2027 is to be decided later this year.

The racing centres on the village, which the organisers say has given the event its typical triathlon atmosphere since the move in 1989, and both race days end with a party in the evening.
