Four days of racing on Lone Peak above Big Sky

The Rut Mountain Runs fill Big Sky Resort in Montana from 9 to 12 September 2027 with races that climb, cross and descend Lone Peak.

The Rut is a mountain running weekend at Big Sky Resort, founded in 2013 by the trail and ultra runners Mike Foote and Mike Wolfe. It has grown into one of the largest trail events in North America, with roughly 4,500 registered participants in 2025. The 2027 edition runs from 9 to 12 September, and registration opens on 12 January 2027 at 8 AM Mountain time.

The 50K brings about 3,200 metres of climbing and descent, with the steep and technical traverse of Headwaters ridge and the ascent and descent of Lone Peak. The 28K takes in the same steep and exposed alpine ground in a shorter distance with about 2,375 metres of climbing. The 21K is one big loop on singletrack along the border of the subalpine and alpine, with about 1,220 metres and none of the exposed ridgelines, and the 11K loops through the lower and middle slopes of the mountain with one aid station at the top of Andesite.

The Lone Peak Vertical Kilometer starts in the resort base area at 7,534 feet and finishes on the summit at 11,166 feet, gaining 3,632 feet in 2.8 miles. Participants who take on the VK, the 28K and the 50K on three days complete the Trifecta, about 84 km in all.

The longer races suit experienced mountain runners who can move safely on steep, exposed and rocky terrain, and mandatory gear is required for the 28K and 50K. The 50K is capped at 825 entrants and the 28K at 900. Crewing is not allowed, but spectators are welcome on the mountain and at the finish in the base area.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from The Rut.
