Four stages in the Koue Bokkeveld

The Tankwa Trek is a four stage mountain bike race for teams of two, based at Kaleo Guest Farm in the Koue Bokkeveld near Ceres in the Western Cape.

The fourteenth edition runs from 11 to 14 February 2027 as one of the first UCI events of the season, with UCI S1 status. The route totals 280 km with 5,500 m of climbing, and entries are limited to 250 teams of two.

Stages 1 and 4 stay near the race village on the trails of Kaleo, through orchards, past rock outcrops and across dam walls. Stage 2 crosses into the Witzenberg Valley, down an old ox wagon trail and through rocky singletrack. Stage 3 is the big day, down the Old Gydo Pass and up the Merino Monster, which the organiser calls arguably the most notable mountain bike climb in South Africa, 7.78 km at 8.8 percent from the water point at its base to the summit. On the route pages stage 1 is 33 km, stage 2 is 88 km, stage 3 is 98 km and stage 4 is 60 km.

The trails are technical and rocky and the cut-offs are firm, with 9 hours to finish stage 3, so this race suits experienced marathon riders. Entry includes all meals from Thursday dinner to a celebratory lunch on Sunday, and riders choose standard, luxury or premium tents, a room at Kaleo or a campsite for a camper van.

The race village stays in one place for the whole long weekend, so supporters can base themselves at Kaleo, and supporter packages cover meals but not accommodation. The route pages list spectator and feeding points with directions, such as the SIP coffee shop on stage 2 and the road to Merino on stage 3.
