Pacific Coast Highway, the pier and Bolsa Chica

The Surf City Marathon brings its marathon, half marathon and 5K back to Huntington Beach on Sunday 7 February 2027.

For 29 years the Surf City Marathon has been a gathering on the Huntington Beach coast, built around the town's surf culture. Race day is Sunday 7 February, and the Beach Mile is run on the soft sand on Saturday 6 February.

The marathon starts at 6:30 a.m. at Pacific Coast Highway and Huntington Street and heads north towards Huntington Beach Pier, cuts inland through Huntington Central Park, then runs north past the Bolsa Chica Ecological Preserve before turning south. About eight miles use the beachfront running path, which stays open to the public and is only 8 feet wide in places. The half marathon starts at 7:15 a.m. and keeps to Pacific Coast Highway past the pier to a U-turn beyond Bolsa Chica.

The half is the organiser's most popular race and is known as scenic and flat. The marathon has a 6.5 hour limit and three cutoff points, and the half has 4.5 hours, so both welcome steady runners. Marathon entrants must be at least 18.

Bibs are collected at the Race Expo in the Huntington Beach Parking Lots on 5 and 6 February. Spectators can watch along Pacific Coast Highway, where both courses pass Huntington Beach Pier.
