From the beach at sea level up Mount Etna

The SuperMaratona dell'Etna climbs from the sea to 3,000 m on the volcano over the classic marathon distance, with a shorter off-road race on the same day.

The next edition is on 12 June 2027 on the north side of Etna. The idea came from US Tosi of Tarvisio in 2004: run up the volcano from sea level to 3,000 m over a marathon distance. Today the organiser, Etna Trail, offers two races, the Da 0 a 3000 over 43 km and the Off-Road over 14.5 km.

On the 2026 course the long race started on the beach at Marina di Cottone in Fiumefreddo di Sicilia and climbed through Piedimonte Etneo and Linguaglossa, then up the Strada Mareneve through vineyards and old lava flows to the Ragabo pine forest. The first part is on tarmac and paving, then Piano Provenzana marks the change to dirt for the last ten kilometres, with about 1,000 m of climbing in 10 km past volcanic cones to Piano delle Concazze and a final steep pull to the finish.

The Off-Road starts at Piano Provenzana and climbs the dirt road towards the volcanological observatory, then runs quickly back down through gullies of volcanic sand. The organiser warns that ice or other conditions can change the route.

Both races suit runners who are ready for a long, steady climb at altitude. Under the 2026 rules the long race had a maximum time of 7 hours 45 minutes, with cut-offs at Linguaglossa and Piano Provenzana. Supporters on Etna Nord can head for Piano Provenzana, which the long race passes and where the Off-Road starts and finishes.
