The Superior Hiking Trail above Lake Superior

Superior runs on the Superior Hiking Trail along Minnesota's North Shore, with the 100 mile tentatively on Friday 10 September 2027 and the 50 mile and marathon on Saturday 11 September.

Rocksteady Running and race director John Storkamp organise the Superior Fall Trail Race, held on the weekend after Labor Day. The 2027 dates are 10 and 11 September, still tentative while permits are in progress. Entry is by a lottery that is planned to open for 15 days from 1 January 2027.

The 100 mile race, founded in 1991, is a 102.9 mile point to point run on the Superior Hiking Trail, about 95 percent technical singletrack. It starts at Gooseberry Falls State Park and finishes at Caribou Highlands Lodge at Lutsen Mountain, with 17,350 feet of climbing, 13 aid stations and a 38 hour limit. The Superior Hiking Trail follows the ridgeline overlooking Lake Superior through the Sawtooth Mountains, and its highest point is 1,829 feet above sea level.

The 50 mile race starts at the Finland Community Center and covers 51.7 miles with 7,950 feet of climbing, 7 aid stations and a limit of 16 hours 45 minutes. The Moose Mountain Marathon, part of the weekend since the early 2000s, starts on Cramer Road near Schroeder and covers 26.2 miles, about 98 percent technical singletrack, with 4,050 feet of climbing, 3 aid stations and a 14 hour limit.

The organisers describe all three distances as extremely hilly, rugged and technical trail races. Along the way runners pass boreal forests, babbling brooks and rushing waterfalls, and all three races finish at Caribou Highlands Lodge on Lutsen Mountain.
