An early season Surrey sportive from Cobham

The Spring Onion Sportive starts and finishes at Cobham Village Hall in Surrey on Sunday 18 April 2027, on a route of about 107 km.

European Cycle Events has run the Spring Onion for years, and 2027 is its 18th edition. It is the early season event in a collection of four Surrey and Isle of Wight sportives, and it supports Action Medical Research. The organiser has altered the course a few times and feels it is now close to the perfect course.

The route is circa 67 miles (107km) with 1237 meters of climbing, with one feed station at The Mill Cafe Stop in Wisborough Green and the start and finish at the HQ. The event is pure GPS, with no signs or road paint, so riders follow a GPX file on their own device. The route is on Strava, and the raw GPX file is emailed the week before.

Doors open at 07:30 at Cobham Village Hall on Lushington Drive and riders start from 08:30. The feed station closes at 13:00 and the event finishes at 16:00. Numbers carry the timing chip and must be collected by 09:00. There is a mechanic at the start and a rolling mechanic on the road.

This is not a race, so ride by the Highway Code, carry at least three tubes and wear a helmet. The series target time for the Spring Onion is 4:00:00, and riders who beat the targets at all four 2027 events get free entry to all four in 2028. A hot pasta meal, drinks and cake wait at the finish.
