From Mt. Baker to Bellingham Bay in seven legs

Ski to Sea is a multisport team relay from the Mt. Baker Ski Area down to Bellingham Bay, held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend in Whatcom County, Washington.

The 2027 race is on Sunday 30 May and starts at 7:30 sharp. First run in 1973, it is owned and run by Whatcom Events, a volunteer community nonprofit. Teams of three to eight racers cover seven sports, and the organiser's course map gives 93.5 miles from the mountain to the bay. Registration opens on 1 January and is limited to 500 teams.

The legs run in order: cross-country ski of about 5 km at the ski area, downhill ski or snowboard of about 4 km, a run of about 13 km down the Mt. Baker Highway with a 670 m drop, a road bike of about 66 km, a canoe leg of about 30 km from Riverside Park in Everson, a cyclocross ride of about 18 km from Hovander Park, and a sea kayak of about 8 km from Squalicum Harbor to the beach at Marine Park.

One timing chip on a wristband is passed from racer to racer at each exchange. Competitive and recreational divisions differ in expected finish time and equipment, and solo racers are not accepted. The Mt. Baker Highway is closed to downhill traffic for part of the morning, so carpooling and timing matter for teams with racers on the mountain.

For spectators the finish line at Marine Park in Fairhaven is the place to be, with a large spectator area, a beer garden and sponsors on site, and buses dropping riders close by. From the spectator area you can watch kayakers jump out and run up the hill to the finish.

On Livebib you can follow a team member live if they choose to share their own position from the phone they carry. That position comes from the participant, not from the race timing, and the official results are published by the organiser.
