The PTR 58 has two big climbs. After an urban stretch out of the historic centre, the first goes up through Atlantic Forest inside the Serra da Bocaina National Park. Then the course drops all the way back to sea level. The second climb goes to Pedra da Macela, with views over the Bay of Paraty, and the return to town is down the Trilha do Ouro, the technical stone-paved trail the Portuguese used to carry gold, with paving more than 200 years old.

The name says 58 but the published distance is 53 km, with 3,200 m up and 3,206 m down: more than 60 m of climbing per kilometre. A 05:00 start means the first climb begins by headlamp, and the 16 h 30 limit leaves the back of the field finishing after dark. It suits runners with a mountain marathon or two behind them who want a hard day and can move on technical descents when tired.

The race goes down to sea level between its climbs, so a supporter can easily misread the halfway point. On Livebib the runner shares a link to their own broadcast, opened in a browser with no account or app: position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate for Paraty that updates as the race goes. When the forest cuts the signal, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated, never as measured.
