A night climb to Paineiras

Uphill Cristo Redentor is an evening uphill race in Rio de Janeiro where three routes start at 17:30 and all finish at Paineiras.

The 2026 edition runs on Saturday 21 November and is the fifth time the Uphill circuit comes to the Cristo Redentor. The circuit itself was born 15 years ago at Serra do Rio do Rastro, the road with 284 curves. In Rio every distance starts at 17:30, so most of the climbing happens as daylight fades, and a head light is mandatory.

The 21K starts on Estrada Dona Castorina at 59 metres and gathers 1,359 metres of climbing and 958 metres of descent. It passes Vista Chinesa, Mesa do Imperador and Alto da Boa Vista, reaches its high point of 674 metres around kilometre 15 and has a time limit of 3 hours 30 with six water points. The 10K starts at Ladeira do Ascurra at 60 metres and climbs 806 metres, 7.5 kilometres of it straight uphill, to a high point of 533 metres, with a 2 hour 30 limit.

The 5K covers 5.06 kilometres from Mirante Dona Marta at 349 metres, with 360 metres of climbing, a high point of 498 metres and a two hour limit. It is not timed, which makes it the gentle way into the event. A van takes participants up from Praça São Judas Tadeu.

Every route is on asphalt closed to cars, and each distance has 300 places. The 21K suits experienced road and trail people who are happy with a long climb in the dark, while the 10K is a hard but short effort. Friends and family should plan to meet participants at Paineiras, where all three routes finish.
