The PTR 34 starts in the historic centre, runs an urban section out of town and climbs the Serra da Bocaina on a mix of roads and trails with views of the sea. Higher up it crosses rivers and dense Atlantic Forest, with the Bay of Paraty below, before coming back to the town where it started. Ascent and descent are both published at 1,100 m.

The organiser describes a wide variety of terrain at moderate technical difficulty: runnable sections, steep climbs and roots. That makes it a race to run rather than hike for most of the field, and the 9-hour limit is comfortable. It suits runners who have done a trail half and want their first long trail race, and fast runners who want a quick, hilly 34 km.

It starts an hour after the PTR 58, one of four races leaving on Saturday, so a supporter may well be following more than one runner. On Livebib the runner shares a link to their own broadcast, opened in a browser without an account or an app: position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes. Under the forest canopy the signal comes and goes. The position is then carried forward along the course and marked as estimated.
