Island hopping at Käringsund

ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Åland gathers at Käringsund on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 August 2027, with short races on the Friday and the World Series and Sprint on the Saturday.

The Åland race links islands through open-water swims and scenic trail runs, and the whole race area is at Käringsund, where registration takes place at Käringsund Resort & Conference. It is part of the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Series, and it spreads over two days, with the Experience for people new to the sport and the Kids race on the Friday.

The World Series is the long one: 46.54 km with 9.96 km of swimming and 36.57 km of running, over 22 swims and 22 runs and about 391 m of climbing. It starts at 07:00 on Saturday, and the buses to the start leave at 05:30. The Sprint is 15.29 km with 3.64 km in the water and starts at Käringsund at 12:30. On Friday the Experience covers 6.6 km with 860 m of swimming from 09:00, and the Kids race of 800 m starts at 10:30.

The water is salty and around 18°C in early August, and you will meet jellyfish: the white ones are harmless, the red ones sting, though less than in the Mediterranean. A wetsuit covering legs and torso in one piece is mandatory even above 19°C, and the weather can bring wind, rain and cold. The World Series has cut-offs at 14:15 and 16:30, so it suits experienced teams.

The Sprint and Experience courses are easy to reach by car. To see the World Series from the water you can rent a boat with a driver, most easily through Norrö Holiday Village, and private boats must stay at least 50 m from teams. Help to teams is not allowed except in a medical emergency.
