Mount Washington Road Race, live.

7.6 miles uphill to the highest peak in the Northeast

The Delta Dental Mount Washington Road Race starts at 9:00 on Saturday 26 June 2027 and climbs the Mt. Washington Auto Road to the summit at 6,288 feet.

There is only one hill in this race. The Delta Dental Mount Washington Road Race is an all uphill run on the Mt. Washington Auto Road in New Hampshire, organised by the Auto Road, and it draws runners from around the globe. Entry is by random selection, and the schedule for 2027 registration will be published soon.

The start is at the base of the Auto Road at Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center on Route 16, between Jackson and Gorham. The course is 7.6 miles long with 4,650 feet of climbing. The average grade is 12 percent, with several long stretches at 18 percent, and the last 50 yards are at 22 percent. The finish is on the summit, the highest point in the northeastern United States and, by the records of the Mount Washington Observatory, home of the world's worst weather.

There is one water refill station halfway up, and medical teams wait at the base, halfway and at the summit. The official time limit is 3 hours 30 minutes from the start mat, and the minimum age is 14. Participants must arrange their own ride down the mountain, usually with a support driver who brings warm, dry clothes and snacks. The Auto Road reopens to normal traffic around 1:30 pm on race day.

Credit for the first timed run goes to George Foster, who climbed the road in 1:42 in 1904. Friends organised a race in his honour in 1936, when twelve runners finished, and the race has been held every year since 1966. Registration includes a warm fleece blanket waiting at the finish line on the summit.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the Mt. Washington Auto Road.
