Spokane's spring 12K and Doomsday Hill
The 51st Lilac Bloomsday Run fills the streets of Spokane on Sunday 2 May 2027 over 12 kilometres, or 7.46 miles.
Bloomsday is Spokane's spring road race, organised by the Lilac Bloomsday Association. The first edition was run on 1 May 1977 with 1,198 finishers, and the field peaked at 61,298 participants in 1996. Sunday 2 May 2027 is the 51st running.
The race starts on West Riverside Avenue between Post and Lincoln in downtown Spokane. Elite wheelchair racers go at 8:30, elite women at 8:45 and the elite men and first large group at 9:00. The coloured groups follow in waves, and the last group, red, starts at about 10:30. Chip timing measures each person from the start line, so a later wave costs nothing.
The 12 km course is challenging rather than flat. It includes Pettett Drive, the climb known as Doomsday Hill since the course change of 1980. Water stations stand at regular intervals on both sides of the street, one of them at the top of Doomsday Hill, and the last one waits just past the finish line. The course closes at 1:30 pm, and people still on it after that can finish on the sidewalk.
Bloomsday suits almost everyone who can cover 12 km on foot, from racers to families who walk it together. Bibs are collected at the Spokane Convention Center on Friday 30 April and Saturday 1 May, and there is no on site registration on race day. The finisher T-shirt goes only to people who cross the line.
On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from Bloomsday.
