The Ice Age Trail through Wisconsin's southern kettles

The Kettle Moraine 100 returns on Saturday 12 June 2027, with the 100 mile, 100K, 50K and team relay all based at the Nordic Trailhead in the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

The Kettle Moraine 100 has been held in the southern Kettle Moraine of Wisconsin since 1996, when Kevin and Kris Setnes started it. The race is always on the second Saturday of June, and in 2027 that is 12 June. It is run today by Ornery Mule Racing with race director Michele Hartwig.

The 100 mile course runs almost entirely on trails, following the Ice Age National Scenic Trail for 65 miles in two out and back sections from the Nordic Trailhead. About 80 percent of it is wooded, and the rest crosses prairie and marsh. Some stretches roll like a roller coaster over rocks and roots, others are smooth and soft with pine needles. The total climb is approximately 8,800 feet, and the 100 mile has a 30 hour cutoff.

Alongside the 100 mile there is a 100K, a 50K that runs point to point from Scuppernong back to Nordic, and a 100 mile team relay for up to four people. The 100 mile is a Western States qualifier and part of the Midwest Grand Slam of ultrarunning, and the field fills fast, so a waitlist is common.

Packet pickup is at the Nordic Trailhead on Friday afternoon, and drop bags are left there for the aid stations. Wisconsin state parks do not allow car camping, so crews should plan where to sleep. The aid stations sit close to the finish, which makes it easy for supporters to move around the course.
