The Mother of All Relays, from Mount Hood to the Pacific

Hood to Coast and Portland to Coast take relay teams across Oregon on 27 and 28 August 2027.

Hood to Coast calls itself the most popular and largest running and walking relay in the world, with participants from over 40 countries and all 50 states. The first edition ran on 7 August 1982 under a full moon, with eight teams of ten led by Bob Foote, from Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood to Pacific City. In 1989 the finish moved to Seaside, and the Portland to Coast walk grew out of 1990.

Teams of 8 to 12 members, most often 12, run or walk in rotating legs from the top of Mount Hood to the beaches of the Pacific Ocean. The Hood to Coast relay covers 196 miles, and Portland to Coast covers 128 miles from Portland. Each member keeps the same place in the rotation for the whole race, which runs through the night.

The relay has filled its team limit for 38 years and on opening lottery day for 33 years in a row, so getting in is part of the challenge. It suits groups of friends, clubs and workplaces who want to share a long weekend effort. Night legs and van logistics need planning: no vehicle may follow a runner to light the road, and motor homes and buses are not allowed on the course.

Teams that miss the lottery can still gain entry through the HTC Annual Membership, and the 2026 relay results are published on the organiser's site.

On Livebib you can follow a team member who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. That position comes from the participant, not from the organiser's timing, and the official results are published by the organiser.
