Along Lake Superior to Canal Park

The 51st Grandma's Marathon runs 26.2 miles along the shore of Lake Superior to Duluth's Canal Park on Saturday 19 June 2027.

Grandma's Marathon weekend is on 18 and 19 June 2027 in Duluth, Minnesota, and the community has welcomed runners every year since 1977. The weekend opens with the William A. Irvin 5K on Friday evening, and the marathon and the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon follow on Saturday morning. Registration for 2027 opened on 1 October.

The marathon is a point to point 26.2 miles that starts north of Duluth near Two Harbors and follows Scenic Highway 61 along the shore of Lake Superior. The course is relatively flat and fast, with rolling hills and a net downhill, and it finishes in historic Canal Park. The time limit is seven hours, a pace of about 16 minutes per mile.

The Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon covers 13.1 miles along the lake before reaching the city limits, where crowds carry participants into Canal Park, and it is now arguably the most popular race of the weekend. The William A. Irvin 5K starts and finishes near the historic ore boat of the same name in Canal Park, on a new course that tours the city. Running the 5K and then the marathon or half completes the Great Grandma's Challenge.

The organiser calls it a world class event with small town charm, and on race day in Canal Park finishers can ring the First Time Finisher Bell or strike the PR Pan. Tens of thousands of spectators turn out on race day, and Canal Park is the place to see the finish.
