275 km from the Grand Canyon to the Grand Staircase

The Grand to Grand Ultra is a seven day stage race across the desert from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to the top of the Grand Staircase.

The race was first run in 2012, and more than 1,200 people from over 60 countries have taken part since. The 2027 edition is billed as the Founders' Farewell Edition, the last with Colin and Tess on the start line as race directors. It runs from 19 to 25 September 2027, with check-in in Kanab, Utah, on 17 September and the transfer to Camp 1 at the edge of the Grand Canyon the next day.

The course covers 275 km, about 171 miles, in six stages: 49.6 km, 43.3 km, a long stage of 85.9 km over two days, then 41.9 km, 42.2 km and a final 12.7 km. It starts at 1,629 m on a remote spot on the North Rim and finishes at 2,156 m on the Pink Cliffs, the top layer of the Grand Staircase, with 5,207 m of total climbing on the way.

The ground changes all week: hard packed and soft sand, dunes, forest trails, red rock climbs, rocky roads and slot canyons, between mesas, buttes and cliffs. Participants can enter the self-supported category, carrying what they need between camps, or the supported category. A new camp stands ready each day for the arrival of the field.

The long third stage runs from Tuesday into Wednesday, and the finish on the Pink Cliffs comes on Saturday 25 September. Transport then leaves the finish line for Kanab, where the awards ceremony and dinner close the week that evening.
