Four routes over the climbs of South Wales

The Dragon Ride is one of the oldest and most iconic sportives in the UK, four routes from Margam Park near Port Talbot into the climbs of Bannau Brycheiniog.

The 2027 edition is on Sunday 13 June, from Margam Park. The first Dragon Ride was held in 2004 with just 280 riders. Human Race, now A.S.O. UK, took over the organisation in 2012, when the start and finish moved to Margam Park, and more than 4,800 cyclists signed up for the 2026 edition.

There are four distances. The Cymru Classic is 99 km, the Medio Fondo 153 km, the Gran Fondo 222 km and the Dragon Devil 298 km. The organiser says the 2027 routes are yet to be confirmed. In 2026 the routes ran in reverse, the Gran Fondo with over 3500 m of climbing, and Devil's Elbow, 1.8 km at an average of 10.3 percent, was a timed King and Queen of the Mountain climb.

The Rhigos climb, on the 2026 routes, also features in the 2027 Tour de France Grand Départ, so the Dragon Ride gives a taste of roads the professional peloton will race the same summer. The organiser says even the Medio Fondo is considerably tougher than most other sportives' longest routes, so the 99 km Cymru Classic, the shortest of the four, is the natural first step.

Every route starts and finishes at the event village in Margam Park. The official charity is Macmillan Cancer Support, and riders who join Team Macmillan get a discounted entry fee when they commit to a fundraising pledge.

On Livebib you can follow a cyclist who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the organiser.
