A Bellingham classic over the Chuckanut ridge

The 33rd in person running of the Chuckanut 50K starts from Fairhaven Park in Bellingham on Saturday 20 March 2027.

The Chuckanut 50K has been held since 1993, when Doug McKeever and Richard West started the race. Krissy Moehl, who ran it as her first ultra in 2000, has directed it since 2003. The race is held on the third Saturday of March, and the 2027 edition on 20 March is the 33rd in person running.

The mass start is at 8am from Fairhaven Park at 107 N Chuckanut Drive, with an early start at 7am, and the course closes at 4pm, an 8 hour limit. The lollipop course opens and closes with about 10k on the smooth Interurban Trail. The middle 30k is what the race is known for, with about 5,000 feet of climbing and the traverse and descent of the Chuckanut Mountain ridge. The fifth and last aid station sits where the Fragrance Lake Trail meets the Interurban, 6.1 miles from the finish.

This is a mountain ultra with technical ground and changeable March weather, so it suits participants with some trail ultra experience. The race offers equal podium spots and equal prize money for women and men, a non binary category and a visually impaired division. The course records belong to Francesco Puppi, 3:26:31 in 2024, and Jodee Adams-Moore, 4:01:23 in 2013.

Spectators gather at Fairhaven Park for the start and finish, and children can run the kids race of half mile loops from 10am to 10:30am. The whole 2026 race day was livestreamed and can still be watched in full.
