Folsom Dam to the State Capitol, net downhill

The California International Marathon starts near Folsom Dam at 7:00 on Sunday 6 December 2026 and finishes at the California State Capitol in Sacramento.

Organised by the Sacramento Running Association, CIM calls itself the Fastest Course in the West and The Golden Race. Its point to point, net downhill course has stayed the same for 42 years and has carried over 100,000 runners towards their marathon goals. The 2026 edition is on Sunday 6 December.

The course covers 26 miles 385 yards from Folsom's foothills, mostly along Fair Oaks Boulevard through Fair Oaks, then into Sacramento along J Street to the finish on Capitol Mall at 7th Street. Gentle rolling hills give way to a flat, fast finish. The mass start is at 7:00, with wheeled athletes and ambulatory athletes with disabilities away at 6:53. Sweep runners cross the start at 7:30, and the six hour limit means the finish closes at 1:30 pm.

The In-Shape Fitness CIM Relay is for teams of two and splits the course at the 13.4 mile mark. First leg runners start with the marathon field, and the second runner of each team finishes with the marathon runners at the Capitol.

Runners cannot drive to the start or be dropped off there. Bus transport from the official pickup points is included in registration, and gear check is only at the expo or at the bus loading area. CIM suits anyone chasing a Boston qualifier or a personal best. Spectators line Fair Oaks Boulevard and gather at the Capitol, where bleachers stand near 7th Street and Capitol Mall.
