From below sea level in Death Valley to Mt. Whitney

The Mount to Coast Badwater 135 starts in waves from Badwater Basin on the evening of Monday 19 July 2027 and finishes at Whitney Portal within 45 hours.

Hosted by AdventureCORPS, the Badwater 135 is billed as the world's toughest foot race and serves as the 135-Mile World Championship. The 2027 race marks the 40th anniversary of the event and runs from Monday 19 to Wednesday 21 July. Entry is by application, accepted from 2 to 20 January 2027, and the selected field is announced live afterwards.

The course covers 135 miles (217 km) of highway non stop. It starts at Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America at 280 feet below sea level, and finishes at Whitney Portal at 8,300 feet, the trailhead to the summit of Mt. Whitney. On the way it crosses three mountain ranges, with 14,600 feet of ascent and 6,100 feet of descent, passing Furnace Creek, Stovepipe Wells, Panamint Springs, Father Crowley, Darwin, Keeler and Lone Pine.

Waves start at Badwater Basin at 8 pm, 9 pm and 10 pm Pacific time. The overall limit to be an official finisher is 45 hours from each wave start, and there are intermediate cutoffs beyond Stovepipe Wells and at Panamint Springs, Darwin and Lone Pine. Every competitor races with a support crew, and competitors and crew chiefs check in at Lone Pine on Sunday 18 July.

Every competitor and crew member must study the organiser's papers on the medical risks of the race and the dangers of running in the heat. The organiser asks people not to come and watch in person, because every extra car adds congestion and parking at the start and finish is very limited, and instead invites them to join a crew or follow the live webcast.
