Folsom to Auburn along the American River

The American River 50 Mile Endurance Run returns on Saturday 3 April 2027, with three point to point races that all finish at Overlook Park in Auburn.

The American River 50 is a spring ultramarathon in the foothills east of Sacramento, run by NorCalUltras with race director Julie Fingar. The organiser describes it as the second largest 50 miler in the United States, and the day has room for first timers as well as people chasing a personal best.

The 50 mile race starts at 6:00 am at Folsom Point. It opens with a 7.4 mile loop toward Browns Ravine, then follows Lake Natoma and the bluffs to Beals Point before the singletrack along the river to Granite Bay, Horseshoe Bar, Rattlesnake Bar and Dowdins Post. The organiser lists 5,403 feet of climbing and a 14 hour cutoff. The 25 mile race starts at 7:00 am at Beals Point and covers the second half of the course, and the 10 mile race starts at 9:00 am near Rattlesnake Bar.

Every race ends with the climb the organiser calls Last Gasp, a 2.4 mile ascent to the finish at Overlook Park in Auburn. A headlamp is recommended for the first dark miles of the 50 mile race, pacers are not allowed in the 25 and 10 mile races, and trekking poles are not permitted.

The races are point to point, so getting to the start needs planning. The race director strongly recommends parking at the finish in Auburn and taking the pre booked bus to the start. Crews may meet their runner only at the approved aid stations.
