Ireland's long-running sportive over the Wicklow gaps

The Wicklow 200 and its 100 km sister route start and finish at Russborough House near Blessington on 13 June 2027.

Running since 1982 and owned by the Irish Veteran Cyclists Association, the Wicklow 200 is held every June and brings together thousands of cyclists from Ireland and abroad. It takes over 150 volunteers to run the day, from checking in riders at the start to marshalling, feed stations and the finish, and Wicklow County Council supports the event.

The 200 km route leaves Russborough House for Valleymount and Kilbride and climbs the Sally Gap, then crosses the Wicklow Mountains to Tinahely on undulating roads with short, sharp climbs. After refuelling in Tinahely come the hardest climbs of the day, Slieve Mann and then Shay Elliott, a stop in Laragh, and the final climb over the Wicklow Gap before a fast, flat run back to Russborough.

The Wicklow 100 shares much of the route on the same day, with the same feed stations, mechanics, marshals and medical cover. It climbs the Sally Gap, drops into Laragh for food and finishes over the Wicklow Gap. The organiser calls it a serious ride in its own right and a good goal for a first big sportive.

The organiser is clear that the full 200 km is only for riders who have trained for months. The FAQ sets cut-offs at the Laragh and Tinahely feed stations, with 200 km riders who reach Laragh after 10:45am re-routed onto the 100 km, and the course closes at 6pm. Roving repair vehicles help with mechanical trouble, but riders are expected to fix their own punctures. Every finisher gets a medal, food and tea or coffee at Russborough House, and free 12-week training plans are on the organiser's site.
