Course & challenge

UTMB

The organiser gave 174 kilometres and 9,700 metres of climb, with a maximum time of 45 hours 30, which put the final cut-off at 17:15 on Sunday 30 August. Their checkpoint chart sets the shape: Les Houches at 9 km, the low point at Saint-Gervais (809 m) at 23 km, Les Contamines at 33 km, the Col du Bonhomme at 45 km, Les Chapieux, then Col de la Seigne (2,511 m) at 63 km on the Italian border and the Col des Pyramides Calcaires (2,565 m), the highest point, just after it.

Courmayeur came at 83 km, then the balcony past the Bertone and Bonatti refuges, Arnouvaz and the Grand Col Ferret (2,527 m) at 106 km into Switzerland. La Fouly, Champex-Lac at 131 km, La Giète, Trient and Vallorcine at 158 km led to the last climbs via the Tête de Béchar to La Flégère and down to Chamonix. Crew access was at Les Contamines, Courmayeur, Champex-Lac and Vallorcine. The 2026 race was won by Ben Dhiman and Blandine L’Hirondel.

This page belongs to the 2026 UTMB. An evening start means the front runs one night and most of the field two, and the organiser’s timetable for the back of the field reaches Courmayeur only on Saturday afternoon. On Livebib, family and friends open the runner’s link with no account or app, see the position on the course, the distance covered and a finish estimate that updates. Over a col without signal the position is carried forward and marked as estimated.

This distance

UTMB

What the name means
Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc: one loop of the massif through Italy, Switzerland and France.
First run
2003

At the first UTMB, in 2003, runners could stop and be classified at Courmayeur or Champex instead of going all the way to Chamonix. It was run in rain, cold and hail, only 67 runners completed the full loop, and Dawa Sherpa of Nepal and the American Krissy Moehl won it.

The mountain has rewritten the race more than once. In 2010 overflowing torrents and rockfall forced the organisers to stop it, and it restarted the next day from Courmayeur. In 2012 the weather closed the way into Italy, and the field ran an alternative 110 km route in France with 5,600 m of climbing. The 2020 edition was cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
