What the name means
La Petite Trotte à Léon, “Léon’s little jaunt”: an understatement for a team tour of some 300 km around Mont Blanc.

The PTL sets itself apart from every other race of the week. Teams of two or three travel together on a grand tour of Mont Blanc of about 300 km and 25,000 m of climbing, largely on high routes with no waymarking, so each team has to find its own way on and off the trails. There is no official ranking.

The route changes every year, chosen to show little-known and often hard-to-reach corners of the French, Italian and Swiss sides of the massif. Because the terrain asks so much, teams are selected on a file that proves their mountain experience.
