The race climbs to Champex-Lac inside the first ten kilometres, then takes the same valley line as the longer races through Plan de l’Au, La Giète and Trient. The Col de Balme at 33 km and 2,202 metres marks the return into France, followed by the Tête de Balme, the Col des Posettes and the long descent through Le Tour and Argentière into the Chamonix valley. At 3,500 metres of ascent it is the shortest of the mountain crossings, and fast enough that most of the field finishes the same day.
