The climb to the Tête de la Tronche at 2,543 metres comes in the first ten kilometres, before the balcony path past the Bertone and Bonatti refuges along the Val Ferret. Grand Col Ferret at 31 km and 2,527 metres carries the race into Switzerland, then La Fouly, Champex-Lac at 55 km, La Giète, Trient and Vallorcine lead to the final climb at La Flégère. With 6,100 metres of ascent and a morning start, the leaders finish in daylight while much of the field arrives in Chamonix overnight.
