From the Alhambra to the Veleta, the highest ultra in Iberia

The 13th Unicaja Ultra Sierra Nevada runs from 2 to 4 April 2027, climbing from the centre of Granada to the ski station of Pradollano in what the organiser calls the highest altitude ultra in the Iberian Peninsula.

Four individual races share one line and one finish, the Plaza de Pradollano in the Sierra Nevada ski station at 2,100 m. The Ultra covers 100 km with 5,500 m of climbing, the Trail 60 km with 3,800 m, the Maratón 40 km with 2,400 m and the Media 25 km with 2,150 m. All are semi self sufficient, and a relay for teams of three runs alongside the Trail.

The Ultra starts at 22:00 on Friday 2 April from the Paseo del Salón in Granada, below the Alhambra and the Generalife, so the first hours are run at night. Along the Genil river the real climb begins, 40 km with more than 2,500 m of ascent to the high point under the Pico Veleta at 3,100 m, before a steep descent to Pradollano. The limit is 23.5 hours and 350 bibs are available.

The shorter races join the same course further up. The Trail starts at 06:00 on Saturday 3 April from the sports hall in Cenes de la Vega with a 15 hour limit, the Maratón at 08:00 the same day from the town hall in Quéntar with 10 hours, and the Media at 09:00 on Sunday 4 April from the town hall in Pinos Genil with 5 hours. Each of these has 450 places.

This is high mountain terrain in early spring, so the organiser names altitude, cold and the night as part of the challenge, and cut off times apply at the checkpoints. Supporters can see the Ultra leave Granada on Friday night and wait at Pradollano, where every race finishes.
