The world’s most beautiful marathon

Fifty-six kilometres around the Cape Peninsula, with the Atlantic on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other.

Two Oceans is South Africa’s other great road ultra, and with Comrades it makes the pair that defines the country’s running calendar. The 56-kilometre course runs south from Newlands through Muizenberg and Fish Hoek, around the peninsula and up the coast road, over Chapman’s Peak Drive with the sea a couple of hundred metres straight down, and then the long climb of Constantia Nek before the descent to the finish at the University of Cape Town. The half marathon runs the day before.

From 2027 the race is a five-day festival rather than a weekend, with the half on the Saturday and the ultra on the Sunday. Chapman’s Peak and Constantia Nek are where the day is decided, and neither is easy to reach as a spectator. Livebib puts the whole loop on the map with the runner on it, splits as they land and an arrival estimate for UCT that keeps updating.
