Two cities, one river, and Summit Avenue last

A point-to-point marathon that starts among the towers of downtown Minneapolis and finishes on the Capitol grounds in Saint Paul.

The 2026 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon ran on Sunday 4 October, with the mass start at 8:00 a.m. Central from South 6th Street in downtown Minneapolis. The TC 10 Mile went an hour earlier, at 7:00 a.m. from Portland Avenue. Both cross the Mississippi and both finish at the Minnesota State Capitol. The organiser has moved the weekend to mid-October from 2027: the next marathon is on Sunday 17 October 2027.

The marathon’s first half belongs to Minneapolis and its water: Douglas Avenue at miles 2–3, Bde Maka Ska Parkway at miles 4–6, Minnehaha Parkway at miles 7–8 and Lake Nokomis at mile 13. The second half is Saint Paul. Summit Avenue, miles 21.5 to 25, is where the crowds gather and where the organiser’s own spectator guide places the hard part — a gradual incline when legs have least left. Then Cathedral Hill, past the Cathedral of Saint Paul, and a downhill finish to the Capitol.

A point-to-point course is hard to follow from the side of the road: you see your runner once at Bde Maka Ska, then have to cross a river to see them again. On Livebib the runner shares a link to their own broadcast, and family open it in a browser with no app or account. It shows where on the line they are, how far they have come, and a finish estimate that moves with their pace, so you know whether to wait on Summit or go straight to Cathedral Hill. Anything estimated is marked as estimated, and the runner decides who gets the link.
