Lighthouse to volcano rim and down to the sea

Transvulcania crosses La Palma from the Fuencaliente lighthouse over the island's volcanic spine to Los Llanos de Aridane.

The 2027 Transvulcania takes place from 6 to 8 May on La Palma in the Canary Islands. Registration opened after an edition in which the records of all eight competitive categories fell, and the organiser reported more than 1,000 people on the waiting list the year before.

The flagship ultramarathon measures 73.06 km with 4,350 m of climbing. It starts at 6:00 from the Faro de Fuencaliente at sea level, follows the GR 131 along the Ruta del Bastón up to the Roque de los Muchachos at 2,421 m, the highest point of the island, then drops on the GR 130 to Puerto de Tazacorte before the last climb to the Plaza de España in Los Llanos de Aridane.

Three other races share the island. The marathon covers 43.20 km from the Refugio El Pilar to Puerto de Tazacorte, mostly downhill with 1,884 m up and 3,329 m down. The half marathon climbs 2,097 m over 24.80 km from the lighthouse to El Pilar. The vertical kilometre climbs 1,164 m over 7.28 km from Puerto de Tazacorte to the Torre de El Time at 17:00.

The organiser calls the ultra undoubtedly one of the toughest trail running races in the world. The half marathon follows the Ruta de los Volcanes to El Pilar and adds a climb through a malpaís of volcanic lava, and for the marathon the organiser asks for special preparation, because the final part descends from the highest point of the island all the way to the beach at Puerto de Tazacorte.
