Volcano trails from Volvic, with the Puy de Dôme on the menu

The Trail de Vulcain is a late winter trail running weekend in Volvic, in the Parc Naturel des Volcans d'Auvergne, a site on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The 25th edition is on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 March 2027, organised by the Amicale des Coureurs de Fond d'Auvergne. Saturday is the short day: the Volvic Nature (13.5 km, 570 m of climbing) starts at 15:00, with La Rando à Josy, an 11 km walk, setting off behind it, and the Trailou races for children start at 14:00.

Sunday brings the long courses, all finishing at the Volvic sports complex. The Ultra Volcanique (77 km, 2,865 m) starts at 6:30 in front of the complex and includes the Puy de Dôme. The Marathon Volcanique (48 km, 1,850 m) starts there at 9:00. The Riom Limagne & Volcans (27 km, 860 m) starts at 8:00 from the Volcan de Lemptégy, reached by shuttle bus leaving the complex at 7:00, and follows the longer courses to the finish over the Puy de la Nugère.

Expect a mix of runnable paths, singletrack and technical sections. The Ultra has four aid stations, at Lemptégy, the Col de Ceyssat, Lemptégy again and the Volvic station, and cut offs along the way, with the last finishers due by 20:00. The Marathon has a cut off at Lemptégy at km 22. The event suits trail runners looking for an early season goal, and the 13.5 km is a sensible first taste.

Supporters may bring spare clothing to their runner at the aid station sites, and the organiser publishes a map of where to watch. Showers, massage and the post race meal are inside the sports complex next to the finish. Licences or a Pass Prévention Santé must be uploaded by 10 February 2027.
