Fifty athletes, one fjord and the Kjerag boulder

thorXtri is an extreme half distance triathlon in the mountains and fjords of southwestern Norway, starting at 05:00 from Lysebotn pier on Saturday 14 August 2027.

The race is limited to just 50 athletes and is run in the spirit of old-school, self-supported mountain racing. The race director is Loyd Georg Færøvik. Registration and the mandatory race meeting are at Lysefjorden Turisthytte on the Friday evening.

The day begins with a chilly 1800 m swim in the fjord. The 90 km bike leg on winding mountain roads starts with the well-known Lysebotn climb and its 27 hairpin bends from the fjord towards the mountain plateau. Then comes the real challenge, a 20 km technical run across rocky terrain and cliff edges to Kjeragbolten, the boulder wedged nearly 1000 m above Lysefjorden, before finishing at Eagle's Nest.

There are two cut-offs for safety: the swim must be done by 06:15 and the bike by 13:00. Only two aid stations serve the course, at Eagle's Nest and a water-only stop at Joker Fjellbutikken passed twice, so athletes carry a collapsible cup or bladder and refill from streams. Run gear goes in a backpack that the organiser carries from T1 to T2.

In the organiser's own words, the race is made for those who love challenging themselves, spectacular trail running and the spirit of old-school triathlon. There are no crowds, and help from spectators, friends or family is not allowed on the course. After the finish, athletes are responsible for getting back to Lysebotn, which normally means cycling down from Eagle's Nest.
