A winter coastal marathon from Alexandra Headland

The Sunshine Coast Marathon is a one day running festival on the Queensland coast, held on Sunday 1 August 2027.

The Sunshine Coast Marathon festival takes place on Sunday 1 August 2027, with every distance starting and finishing on Alexandra Parade at Alexandra Headland. It is run by Atlas Events, who also stage marathon festivals in Hobart, Brisbane and Cairns, and the marathon course is AIMS certified.

The marathon starts at 6:00 on a single lap course that the organiser describes as predominantly flat. It passes through Twin Waters and Mudjimba and crosses the Sunshine Motorway Bridge twice, with an overall cut-off of 6 hours 20 minutes from the gun and interim checkpoints along the way. The half marathon starts at 7:15, the 10 km at 9:00, the 5 km run and the 5 km walk at 10:15, and the 2 km mini marathon at 11:00.

The spread of distances makes this a family festival as much as a race. The marathon has a minimum age of 17, the half marathon 14, the 10 km 11, the 5 km 7, and the 2 km is open from age 4 with an adult for children under 7. Pacers run in the longer events, and people chasing a time can use the flat course for a personal best.

For spectators the organiser points to Alexandra Headland, Cotton Tree and the Sunshine Motorway Bridge crossings as good places to watch. The festival also raises money for charity and community groups, and participants can fundraise when they enter.
