Up Chips, over Baldy, home along the Cirque

Speedgoat is a mountain race at Snowbird, Utah, where even the 10K climbs the steep Chips Switchbacks.

The 2027 Speedgoat Mountain Races run from July 22 to 24 at Snowbird, part of the UTMB World Series. Every race starts in the Snowbird Center Plaza area and finishes on the Plaza Deck. The 50K starts at 06:30 on Saturday, July 24, with 3,450 m of climbing (about 11,400 ft) and a 13-hour limit. On Friday, July 23 the 30K starts at 07:30 with 2,000 m and 10 hours, and the 10K at 09:00 with 500 m and 3 hours 30. The organiser also lists The Summit, 3.5 km, on Saturday.

All of the longer courses start the same way: a short downhill service road, a 600 ft climb to the first singletrack, then the steep Chips Switchbacks and three more climbs to the Snowbird summit, at about 11,000 ft. From there the 50K drops roughly four rocky miles to Dutch Flat, its lowest point, before climbing to Mineral Basin, up Mount Baldy, along Baldy Ridge to the Tunnel, and back up the Cirque ridge to Hidden Peak before the long descent home.

On a course this steep, distance says little about time: the 50K climbs 3,450 m in 50 km. On Livebib the runner shares a link to their own broadcast. Family open it in a browser, no app or account needed, and see position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes. Where the phone drops signal in the basins, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated instead of freezing.
