Adventure triathlon in the slate quarries of Llanberis

Slateman is a triathlon and duathlon in Llanberis on Sunday 13 June 2027, swimming in Llyn Padarn and running through the Dinorwig slate quarries.

Always Aim High Events organises Slateman in the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia). Every triathlon starts with a swim in Llyn Padarn in the shadow of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the bike routes use the passes around the mountain, and the run climbs into the Dinorwig slate quarries, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the first of two races in the Adventure Triathlon & Duathlon Series, with the Sandman on Anglesey in September.

The Sprint is a 750 m swim, 20.2 km bike and 5.8 km run, with a ride up the Llanberis Pass to the Pen y Gwryd Hotel on closed road from Nant Peris. The Standard, the original Slateman distance, is 1500 m, 49.9 km and 11.7 km, riding round Yr Wyddfa through Beddgelert and up the Nant Gwynant Pass to Pen y Pass. The Legend 70.3 is 1,900 m, 92.6 km and 23.1 km, adding the Ogwen Valley past Tryfan and the Glyderau, with two laps of the run. The Standard Duathlon swaps the swim for a 5.8 km run.

The Ultra 140.6 is a 2.4 mile swim, 180 km bike with over 2600 m of climbing, and a lap based run in the quarries. Athletes who finish three loops before 6:30pm may take the Mynydd finish up Yr Wyddfa, 49.9 km in all, while the Chwarel finish is four quarry loops and 44.5 km. The organiser says plainly that it is not for the inexperienced.

The run is the part people remember: a 2 km climb up the zig zags through the quarry, then forest trails past the Old Quarry Hospital and Parc Padarn. The Ultra usually starts at 05.15am, the Legend first wave at 07.00 and the Standard at 08.00, all confirmed in final instructions 10 days before. Registration is usually on the field next to the Llanberis Community Centre, where the event village has music, commentary and food.
