Madrid's New Year's Eve 10 km, from Concha Espina to Vallecas

On 31 December 2026 the Nationale-Nederlanden San Silvestre Vallecana closes the year in Madrid with two 10 km races, the 49th Popular and the 62nd Internacional.

The San Silvestre Vallecana was first run in 1964, when just 57 people took the start. Today it is the race Madrid runs on the last afternoon of the year, with up to 42,000 bibs in the Popular race and a separate elite race, the Internacional, later in the evening. In 2019 the IAAF gave it its Gold Label.

Both races cover a certified 10 km on asphalt. They start on Calle Concha Espina at Plaza Sagrados Corazones and head down Serrano, through Puerta de Alcalá, Cibeles and the Paseo del Prado, then along Ciudad de Barcelona and Albufera into Vallecas. Because of the difference in altitude between start and finish, Eliud Kipchoge's 26:54 here in 2006 could not be ratified. The Popular finishes on Calle Candilejas beside the Estadio de Vallecas.

The Popular sets off in waves from 16:50, with further starts at 17:00, 17:15, 17:35, 17:55 and 18:20 and up to 8,000 people in each. Faster waves are for accredited times under 50 and 60 minutes, and you choose your wave when you enter. Entrants must be 16 by race day. The Internacional starts at 19:55, is limited to 2,000 athletes with qualifying times under 39 minutes for men and 45 for women, and ends with 150 m on the grass inside the stadium.

For spectators, the Paseo del Prado and Cibeles are easy places to watch in the first kilometres, and the closing streets of Vallecas give a view of the finish of both races. The organiser describes the Popular as a race to enjoy and share, and the Internacional as the night the elite returns to Vallecas, so the afternoon and the evening feel quite different.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, so the dot moves only as well as that phone and its signal. Official results come from the organiser of the San Silvestre Vallecana.
